Taran Eden Casey is noteworthy in the world of Japanese woodblock carving, being the first westerner to undertake a full traditional apprenticeship in this art form. Born in Wales, UK, Taran moved to Japan to pursue his dream of becoming a professional Mokuhanga (woodblock print) carver. He currently resides in Tokyo, where he studies under the esteemed 9th-generation master, Motoharu Asaka, of Takumi Hanga.

Currently in the latter years of a 7-10 year apprenticeship, Taran has established himself as one of the top professional Mokuhanga carvers. His ultimate goal is to reach the highest level of mastery of carving, forever reaching to attain the level of the old masters carvers of this craft. Taran is dedicated to faithfully reproducing historical prints, and produce modern works of woodblock printed art. Promoting traditional Mokuhanga for future generations, printmakers and enthusiastic lovers of woodblock prints alike.

As part of his mission to introduce this historical craft to new audiences, Taran creates YouTube videos that document the production of his prints. In these videos, he sheds light on traditional techniques that were once closely guarded secrets within woodblock studios, aiming to preserve the knowledge of this craft and assist emerging printmakers in honing their skills.

In the traditional production of Mokuhanga, a quartet of professionals collaborate: the publisher, artist, carver, and printer. Taran specializes in the carving discipline, pushing the boundaries of the intricate processes that contribute to this profound cultural artifact.
