Working on the Hokusai Reborn series was so much fun, so I wanted to make a bonus image to go with the Hokusai Reborn series from the collection of the British Museum’s original Hokusai drawings. I decided on a figure with long legs, but as I was tracing it I felt it really needed more. On a separate sheet (clearly intended to be on a book folded side by side), there was another drawing of a man with long arms. I decided to put them on in the same image because they reminded me of some Mr. Men (Mr. Tickle and Mr. Tall). Clearly people have been making memes since time immemorial. Perhaps I should have given Mr. Tall some nice red Dr.Martens in the future!
It is likely that this series, had the original project been taken to conclusion, it would have been made on very thin cheap paper. So to pay homage to that, this print is on an 8-monme ganpi with no size.
The kanji reads ‘the people from the long-armed country’ and ’the people of the long-legged country’. Not sure what countries these are supposed to be. Your guess is as good as mine!
As with all the other images in the Hokusai Reborn series this image was carved on Boxwood.
